Sabuk is located just below Kangwon Land, a popular casino in Korea, as well as High 1,
the well-known ski-resort. Both are a mere 10 minute bus-ride up from Sabuk. As a result of
the casino and ski-resort, Sabuk has a multitude of hotels, and although it is nothing more
than a small town, it gives the impression of trying to be a city.
Mindungsan Mountain is also nearby (in Jeungsan),
and is popular with hikers due to it’s ease of ascent and picturesque scenery.
Sabuk hosts an annual Coal-Mining Festival, held around August every year.
Sabuk Train Station
Sabuk conveniently lies on the train-line between Gangneung and Seoul, with fairly regular
trains running in both directions.
Sabuk / Gohan Bus Terminal
Sabuk shares the same bus terminal as its neighbour,
Gohan (named “Gohan Bus Terminal
”, despite it being closer to Sabuk).
Sabuk has many Korean restaurants to choose from, as well as a couple of places serving more Western fare.
Misarang Pizza Place
The ‘Misarang’ pizza place has good ‘imsil cheese pizza’ (임실치즈피자) with various toppings, and the staff speak
fairly good English. An 8” pizza costs around 12,000 won, 13” is 17,000 won, and for an 18” pizza, expect to pay
about 22,000 won. Call 592-1141 for deliveries to homes or hotels.
The ‘Western Bar’ is a popular hangout and can be found near to the train station and NH bank. For around
10,000 won you can eat an impressive ‘double dongkas’ (pork cutlet in breadcrumbs) meal – enough to satisfy any
appetite! A similar establishment to the popular Korean chain ‘W.A. Bar’, the Western Bar serves a selection of
foreign beers and other drinks – and the staff in there let you hook up your mp3 player to the sound system if
you want to hear some of your tunes played!
There are no large supermarkets here, besides the usual spread of chain stores, such as Family Mart.
It has a central market, which, despite being small, stocks an array of fresh greens and other produce. Buses
to Taebaek stop at the large Emart supermarket (between
Gohan and Taebaek) and the journey takes about 25 minutes or so from Sabuk.
There is a large gym and leisure centre located in nearby Gohan
, which is part of Kangwon Land.
